  7.     As the election season approaches, senior Republicans are
  8. worried that White House chief of staff John Sununu is burrowing
  9. deeper into his bunker, refusing to listen much to anyone except
  10. budgetmeister Richard Darman and domestic policy chief Roger
  11. Porter. Longtime Bush confidants are miffed at Sununu's recent
  12. practice of cutting them off at the pass and having a junior
  13. aide return their calls, dictate marching orders to them, and
  14. even respond to their letters to Bush. So how is a honcho to
  15. convey his thoughts to the President? Last month Bush himself
  16. opened up a new back channel, giving his top political advisers
  17. a private post-office box number through which they could
  18. contact him directly.
